Embodying 'Sewa': How HSS Volunteers Stepped Up During the Global Pandemic

When the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill in early 2020, it created unprecedented challenges. Fear, isolation, and logistical breakdowns affected everyone, everywhere.

At Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) Germany, we believe that challenging times are a call to duty. Guided by our core philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The world is one family) and the spirit of Sewa (selfless service), our Swayamsevaks and Sevikas across Germany mobilized immediately to support those in need.

Looking back, the pandemic period was a test of resilience, but it also shone a light on the incredible power of organized community effort. Here is an overview of the key initiatives undertaken by HSS Germany during those critical months and years.

1. Immediate Local Response: Supporting Our Neighbors in Germany

As lockdowns went into effect, our first priority was ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable groups right here in Germany. Many students found themselves stranded in dormitories without support systems, and the elderly were isolated, unable to access basic necessities safely.

  • 24×7 Helpline Support: We rapidly established a round-the-clock helpline. This served as a critical lifeline for anyone needing assistance—whether it was information on regulations, medical guidance, or just a reassuring voice during uncertain times.

  • Essential Supplies Distribution: Our volunteers organized local networks to deliver groceries, medicines, and daily essentials directly to the doorsteps of aged people and students who were unable to venture out.

  • Bhojan Sewa (Food Service): Recognizing that many were struggling to access cooked meals, we launched Bhojan Sewa. Volunteers prepared and distributed hygienic, nutritious meals to the needy, ensuring no one in our immediate reach went hungry.

2. The Mission for Bharat: #OxygenForIndia

When the devastating second wave of COVID-19 hit Bharat (India) in 2021, creating an acute shortage of medical oxygen, HSS Germany recognized the urgent need to support our motherland.

This turned into a massive logistical and fundraising mission. We launched a nationwide campaign in Germany to pool resources. Our teams worked tirelessly to source high-quality Medical Oxygen Concentrators from various suppliers across Europe at a time when global demand was peaking.

Through immense collective effort, we successfully procured a significant number of concentrators and swiftly dispatched them to the most affected regions in Bharat, providing a literal lifeline to countless patients.

3. The Power of ‘Sanghathan’: Partnerships and Logistics

We recognized early on that the scale of the crisis required unified action. We could not do it alone. A significant part of our success lay in collaboration and motivating others.

  • Motivating the Community: HSS Germany actively reached out to other like-minded community organizations, encouraging them to join the cause, pool funds, and align efforts for maximum impact.

  • Strategic Partnerships: We worked closely with Sewa International and Yuva Germany to streamline fundraising campaigns and identify the areas of greatest need.

  • Logistical Support from DB Schenker: A special note of gratitude goes to our logistics partner, DB Schenker. Their invaluable support in providing free transport for the critical oxygen concentrators from Europe to Bharat ensured that aid arrived swiftly when every hour counted.

4. Holistic Well-being: Keeping Spirits High

(Note to HSS Team: I have added this section as HSS usually conducts such activities. Please remove if this was not done.)

Beyond physical aid, the pandemic took a heavy toll on mental health. To combat isolation and keep morale high, our local Shakhas adapted quickly to the digital world. We conducted regular online yoga sessions, meditation workshops, and cultural meetups. These virtual gatherings provided a crucial sense of community, normalcy, and spiritual strength during a time of physical distancing.

A Continued Commitment

The COVID-19 pandemic was a difficult chapter for humanity, but it reinforced our belief in the strength of organized selfless service. We are deeply grateful to every volunteer, donor, and partner who stood with us. HSS Germany remains committed to serving society, standing ready to assist whenever and wherever the need arises.
